Uli as a plugin helps users tackle online gender-based violence on their browser feeds in India, which correlates to SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). Further, the product is supported through annotations of slur words in multiple Indian languages by people belonging to marginalised genders and communities in India. The crowdsourced list of slurs is also publicly available for use by trust and safety teams to help them engage in better moderation practices. It also relates to SDG5 in as much as it supports women and marginalised genders by providing tools and resources for relief and building a collective response against online violence. Making online spaces safer for marginalised communities can advance other SDGs. Social media and other digital platforms are an extension of public spaces and are increasingly used to access essential services. Negative experiences online can reduce the safety and resilience of urban infrastructure, as well as the overall health and well-being of citizens. This became even more apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic, with communities relying on social media to mobilise resources, share critical health information, verify the availability of health infrastructure, and access public institutions (Wong et al. 2021). If silenced and removed from digital public spaces, marginalised groups are excluded from a range of essential functions accessed by users online.

Email: Uli has an archiving feature where archived posts are sent to an email. It also has a crowdsourcing feature; this feature needs a list of emails to which the Tweet link, on which action is requested, is sent. These emails as well as tweet links that are sent to the list of emails are stored on Tattle servers. Uli only collects an email ID, and for the specific and limited purpose of sending archived posts/sending crowdsourced Tweet links. The user can reset the account, which will delete all the data on it within a month. Otherwise, this data is stored indefinitely for the purpose of ensuring Tweet links that the user requests action on are sent to the user as and when they flag it.
Content is collected and stored but NOT distributed.
Uli collects slur words in Indian languages for the purpose of filtering them out when the tool is active on a user's computer. It would/may qualify as the collection and storage of inappropriate content in this regard. The project moderates inappropriate/ abusive content online through redaction. This necessitates that we create and store a database of slurs and abusive content. We have a public dataset of slur words that we crowdsource from gender and feminist rights organisations. Activists and researchers identify the slur words and provide us with metadata through annotation exercises. This in turn helps the plugin filter slurs on a user's browser feeds. In all our datasets, personally identifiable information such as user handles are removed.
