OpenEWS aligns with SDGs 13 and 11, which focus on climate action, mitigating the impacts of climate change, and reducing the adverse effects of natural disasters, by providing a framework for early warning and response systems that help vulnerable populations prepare for and respond to natural disasters. Specifically, OpenEWS contributes to: Disseminating Early Warnings: OpenEWS is essential for transmitting early warnings about climate-related disasters, such as storms, floods, and heatwaves. By delivering timely alerts to at-risk populations, it helps them prepare in advance, potentially saving lives and reducing the impact of these events. Enhancing Resilience: While it doesn’t provide climate data directly, OpenEWS helps build resilience by ensuring that warnings are communicated effectively to vulnerable communities, allowing them to take appropriate action, such as evacuating or securing critical infrastructure. Supporting Climate Adaptation: OpenEWS contributes to adaptation efforts by enabling rapid responses to climate-related hazards. Early warnings allow governments, NGOs, and communities to act in a way that reduces vulnerability and enhances their ability to cope with climate impacts. Coordinated Response: OpenEWS improves coordination by providing a platform for various stakeholders to disseminate consistent, accurate information, ensuring that responses to disasters are swift and efficient, which is critical in minimizing the effects of climate change. In summary, OpenEWS supports SDG 13 by improving the speed, reach, and effectiveness of climate-related early warning systems, which is a key component of disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation strategies.
Amazon SQS for queuing and processing jobs is abstracted through the "Shoryuken" Ruby gem (https://github.com/ruby-shoryuken/shoryuken). Sentry for crash reporting is not a mandatory dependency. OpenEWS relies on Somleng (https://github.com/somleng/somleng), which can be configured to use Twilio and Amazon Chime APIs.

1. Data Encryption How: OpenEWS uses encryption protocols (such as SSL/TLS) to secure data in transit between the system and end-users. This ensures that all communications, including alert dissemination and any user data, are protected from unauthorized access. Impact: This protects the confidentiality of sensitive data, preventing it from being intercepted during transmission. 2. Access Controls and Authentication How: Access to sensitive data within OpenEWS is restricted based on roles. Only authorized users (e.g., system administrators, authorized government officials, or NGO personnel) can access specific types of data. Impact: This minimizes the risk of unauthorized data access, ensuring that only those who need the information for response coordination can access it. 3. Data Minimization How: OpenEWS collects only the necessary data required for sending early warnings (e.g., beneficiary phone numbers and relevant contact details). Personal data is kept to a minimum, and no extraneous or sensitive personal data is stored unless absolutely necessary for the response. Impact: By limiting the data collected, OpenEWS reduces the potential exposure of unnecessary personal information. 4. Anonymization of Beneficiary Data How: In some instances, OpenEWS anonymizes sensitive beneficiary data by using unique identifiers instead of storing personally identifiable information (PII) like full names or addresses, unless required by the context of the warning. Impact: This ensures that even if data is compromised, there is minimal risk of identifying individual beneficiaries. 5. Data Retention and Deletion Policies How: OpenEWS has clear policies regarding data retention, ensuring that beneficiary data is only stored for as long as necessary for the purpose of issuing early warnings. Once the data is no longer required, it is securely deleted. Impact: This reduces the risks of data breaches and ensures compliance with privacy standards by not holding onto data longer than needed. 6. Secure APIs and Third-Party Integrations How: OpenEWS uses secure APIs to integrate with other disaster management systems and communication channels. These APIs are secured through authentication mechanisms and encryption to prevent unauthorized access or data leaks. Impact: This ensures that any integration with third-party systems does not compromise the security or integrity of the data being transferred. 7. Compliance with Data Protection Regulations How: OpenEWS complies with relevant data protection regulations, including Personal Data Protection Act No. 26 2012 or local laws (where applicable), to ensure that data collection, storage, and processing adhere to privacy standards. Impact: This protects users' privacy rights and ensures that OpenEWS operates within the legal frameworks that govern data security and privacy. 8. Transparency in Data Handling How: OpenEWS maintains transparency about the types of data it collects, how it is used, and who has access to it.
